Once upon a time, not so long ago, this yellow book was a staple in our lives. It provided handy information about an area, an address, a telephone number and helped us find a new place to do business.
On top of all that, it made a great booster chair, door stop or a weight to press out wrinkles in important papers.
That was then, but what about now?
Now most people don’t even answer the phone when it rings. Alexander’s bell ringy-dingies until it rolls over to voice mail. Why answer when typically the caller is someone you don’t want to talk to anyway?
We don’t need to pick up, we already know who is calling and what they want. We aren’t buying, paying or playing so one ringy dingy, two ringy dingy, hang up!
Our communication today is the cell phone, usually a smart phone. Yes it’s smart enough to transmit a message without ever having to connect two people.
We text. We email. We Twitter, DM, Instant message, Skype, IRchat and soon Google will let us Wave. How cool are we?
My iPhone has a GPS on it. It knows where I am, what is playing at the movies closest to me. It can lead me to all the open houses in the area. When I run out of open houses, I can then drive-by all the homes for sale nearby.
Heck, when I get hungry I can choose a food category, shake my silly little wonderful iPhone and it will spin a dial like a fancy Las Vegas slot machine, entertaining me with anticipation of what restaurant it will choose for me.
Then there is Google Voice. This handy service means you call Google and ask “Where is the nearest Starbucks?” It will determine your location and deliver the answer to your phone, complete with map instructions to get there.
Yellow Pages you just don’t cut it anymore. Thanks for the memories, but we are moving on.

Ah the last time i used one of those was in 10th grade , it was loooong time ago.
Nowdays those huge books are just waste of money and space ! Everything you need , you can find in Google, so that books should be recycled
Not sure that those of us who read blogs are what would be considered representative of the whole population, but I guess we do represent the part of the population who uses phone books less. OTOH, when I needed a roofer fairly recently I found that I couldn’t easily compare ads for different ones easily online and the book was way easier, even though there are plenty of things I look up online.
Tom, You are correct, there are something I can see would be easier to find in the Yellow Pages. I.E. the roofer comes to you so the price is probably more important that the proximity to the job.
I do believe the younger generation is not at all familiar with Yellow Pages as they are so accustomed to Googling things. I know my kids are!
Amoureuse, I won’t ask how long ago 10th grade was…but I am one who would rather opt out of receiving those books. That photo is actually the books that were left on my porch just this year! I don’t want them and yes, I did recycle. What a waste of energy to leave on my doorstep!
used the book last week. Garage door opener quit, couldn’t get door open or cars out. Google search yielded a bunch of national chains. I wanted a local company. After 15 minutes of clicking around went to the print yellow pages book and very first ad was for a local company that worked on my brand opener, had a BBB rating, didn’t charge extra for weekend services and had a local number. Problem resolved.
The internet is wonderful for browsing, but not for local buying decisions, at least not yet
